A rare baroque monument in Skupovce in Most is behind the scaffolding. Restoration will begin

An interesting fact is that the lower statues of St. John of Nepomuk and St. Joseph glued to the plinth change places, because they were accidentally thrown after the move in 1977. “We will have to use a smaller crane,” said academic sculptor and restorer Jan Vích, who is in charge of the work.

According to him, the stone is of good quality and fortunately does not fall apart. The professional intervention can be done without a transfer to the restoration workshop. “Everything will take place here,” added the sculptor. Work will begin at the top, where a statue of the Virgin Mary treading on a dragon stands on a column.

No one knows who created the Marian Column. I only know the patron Johann Andreas Gräbner, who had the column built. The monument stood from 1710 on III. square in the old Most. In 1952, the communists arbitrarily had him taken to the lapidary, allegedly so that there would be a place for building bus stops on the square.

The column then ended up at the church in Vtelna and, after restoration, was moved to its current location 17 years ago. The object is now in bad condition. According to experts, this is a rare monument, which is also a reminder of the defunct historical core of the old Most.
