The requirement was that the workplace should include a modular vacuum chamber for space simulation, a thermal unit, a vacuum pumping system and a workplace for the preparation and processing of the tested components.
“We had to come up with not only a functional technology, but also how this workplace should look visually,” said student team manager Hedvika Pavelková from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at ZCU.
“Colleagues from the Faculty of Health Studies of ZČU had to focus on the project also from the point of view of the health of the employees, so that the workplace would be healthy for them,” she added.

Another team had the same task and came up with a different idea. “We wanted to replace the chamber opening system and suggest moving samples around the room, we also added a QR reader for samples,” said the head of this group, Adam Kič from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
It was not an effort for its own sake – the mentioned company, among other things, produced a test chamber for the European Space Agency (ESA).
“For us, the student solution will be an inspiration for what the entire future workplace could look like, including in terms of design,” Šárka Stará from the company’s marketing told Novinkám.

Hand from the printer
The students, under the guidance of representatives from the OttoBock company, also had the task of preparing the design and construction of a special smart adapter for a child’s upper limb prosthesis, which can also be used during sports.
“We wanted our design to be easily and quickly printed on a 3D printer, to be cheap, to allow for 360-degree rotation, and at the same time to be able to firmly hold, for example, the handlebars to the bike,” explains Jakub Starec from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, who was in charge of his team constructional solutions.
The main thing is cooperation
Teaching projects of interdisciplinary cooperation have been running under the banner of the DESING+ project at the University of West Bohemia for 20 years.
“At the beginning of the winter semester, students from several faculties don’t even know each other, which makes it all the more difficult for them to come up with these innovations in a matter of weeks,” pointed out one of the organizers, Stanislav Hosnedl.
“The main importance of these projects is not and cannot be due to the short time to solve them in the depth of elaboration, but above all in the interdisciplinary cooperation of the students,” explained Hosnedl.
