Since the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, the ultra-Orthodox have enjoyed the privilege of being exempt from military service. While in the first years of the hundred’s existence there were only a few thousand of them, today the ultra-Orthodox Jews make up about 17 percent of the total male population of military age, and last year 66 thousand of them were exempted from military service.

However, according to many, the first ultra-Orthodox IDF should join the military as well due to the ongoing conflict with the Palestinian radical movement Hamas.
