Prague 10 will open a newly renovated elementary school in Strašnice. With the financial support of the capital city, the town hall invested 465 million crowns in the repair of the building, which had been abandoned for years. In addition, the work was not easy because of the heritage-protected complex.
“All the work that was done there at that school had to be highly qualified. That means from masonry work to carpentry work, they had to put exact replicas of windows, doors, so it’s very financially demanding work and it’s atypical things and atypical production ,” said Martin Valovič (ODS) – mayor of Prague 10.
“It is, of course, a huge complication for the builder, any process must be approved by the state preservation authority, and this is, for example, the color of the facade, the color of the window paint, whether the window sills can be replaced or have to be refurbished,” said Tomáš Pek (TOP 09 ) – 1st Deputy Mayor of the City of Prague 10.
In the renovated building, there will be classrooms, a clubhouse, gymnasiums, several cabinets and offices, a choir room and a dining room with its own kitchen. For example, all technologies, including air conditioning and lighting, will be repaired.
“That school underwent a total, comprehensive reconstruction, but of course taking into account the fact that it is a cultural monument, it is an art nouveau school with a functionalist extension, that is, everything will be preserved, but repaired so that it works and of course it will be equipped with for the present,” said Ondřej Pocharovský (TOP 09) – councilor of the Municipal Council of Prague 10.
The future community school should focus on foreign languages.
“The school will have expanded language teaching and an increased number of physical education, so I don’t want to say that it will be a language school, but four languages will be taught there. Certainly English, that is the basis, we are counting on the German language, Italian and Spanish,” he said Ondřej Pocharovský (TOP 09) – councilor of the Municipal Council of Prague 10.
The elementary school in Olšiny should accommodate up to 250 pupils. The town hall wants to finish the work this year. Enrollment not only in the first grades should then be completed by parents with their children next spring. So the first pupils will sit down in brand new desks in September 2025.
