Rubiales started the union’s problems last year when he kissed forward Jenni Hermos without permission after the Spanish women’s victory in the World Cup final. He received a three-year punishment from FIFA for this, resigned, and the prosecutor’s office is demanding 2.5 years in prison for sexual assault and coercion.

Pedro Rocha was temporarily appointed head of the union, but he was soon suspended due to an investigation for embezzlement. The union and Rubiales also face an investigation into possible corruption in the move of the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia.

A three-member council should be entrusted with the management of the union. According to the media, the sports commission would like Vicente del Bosque to head it. The 73-year-old former coach, who led Spain to the title of world and European champions, has not yet commented on the offer.

According to the media, Del Bosque wants to wait to see how the situation around the suspended Rocha develops and also what attitude FIFA will take on the Spanish government’s move. The rules of the world federation prohibit the interference of states in the management of football associations.

“FIFA and UEFA will request additional information to determine the extent to which the commission’s establishment may affect the association’s ability to manage its own affairs independently and without government interference,” the world and European federations said in a joint statement.
